On 27 January 2026, India and the European Union officially concluded negotiations for a landmark Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Hailed as the “mother of all trade deals,” it aims to create one of the world’s largest free-trade zones, covering approximately 2 billion people and nearly 25% of global GDP.
Key Highlights of the Deal
Tariff Reductions: India will eliminate or significantly reduce tariffs on 96.6% of the value of EU goods exports.
- Automobiles: Tariffs on cars will drop from 110% to as low as 10%, with duties on car parts fully abolished over 5–10 years.
- Wines & Spirits: Duties on European spirits (currently up to 150%) will be slashed to a flat 40%.
- Industrial Goods: Tariffs on machinery (up to 44%), chemicals (22%), and pharmaceuticals (11%) will be mostly eliminated.
Services Market: India granted “groundbreaking” access to its services market, specifically in financial services, maritime, and telecommunications.
Indian Export Benefits: The EU will ease access for Indian exports in labour-intensive sectors, including textiles, pharmaceuticals, gems and jewellery, and leather.
Environmental Support: The EU will provide €500 million over the next two years to support India’s transition to green energy and industrial sustainability.
Implementation Timeline
- Negotiation Conclusion: 27 January 2026.
- Legal Scrubbing & Signing: Expected to take roughly six months.
- Ratification: Must be approved by the European Council and European Parliament, as well as from the Union Cabinet in India, chaired by the Prime Minister.
- Target Effective Date: The parties aim to begin implementation by January 2027.
Conclusion
The finalisation of this deal follows nearly two decades of on-and-off talks that began in 2007. It is viewed as a strategic move to de-risk economies amidst rising global trade tensions and high tariffs from other major partners like the United States. In tandem with the FTA, the two sides are also finalising a Security and Defence Partnership.
