India Cabinet Approves Easing of FDI Policy for Land‑Bordering Countries in Select Sectors

On 10 March 2026, the Union Cabinet of India approved a major reform to liberalize Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) regulations for entities from countries that share a land border with India. The decision relaxes the requirement for government approval in cases where the beneficial owner is resident of a land‑bordering country, allowing automatic route clearance in select sectors while retaining safeguards for national security and strategic interests.

A key feature of the decision is that proposals for land‑bordering country (LBC) investments in specified sectors and activities of manufacturing; including capital goods, electronic capital goods, electronic components, polysilicon, and ingot-wafer production; shall be processed and decided within 60 days. This ensures a fast, predictable, and transparent investment approval process, reducing delays and regulatory uncertainty.

The policy is expected to attract greater foreign capital inflows, enhance technology transfer, and boost domestic manufacturing capabilities. It also aims to support infrastructure and technology-driven sectors by providing easier access to global and regional investors. For Indian industry, the reform improves access to capital, strengthens supply chain integration, and creates opportunities for collaborative growth.

For investors, the streamlined process reduces approval risks and accelerates project implementation timelines. By providing clarity, timeliness, and procedural efficiency, the government intends to increase investor confidence, encourage long-term commitments, and strengthen India’s competitiveness in key manufacturing and technology sectors. Overall, the decision balances liberalization with strategic safeguards while promoting sustainable economic growth.
