New Certification Requirements Restrict Market Access for Internet Connected CCTV Cameras in India

Effective April 1, 2026, the Government of India has implemented enhanced regulatory controls on internet connected CCTV cameras, introducing strict certification requirements that significantly impact market access for foreign manufacturers. The measure is understood to be driven by national security considerations, particularly around data integrity, remote access vulnerabilities, and potential risks associated with connected surveillance systems.

Under the revised framework, all internet enabled CCTV cameras must comply with updated certification protocols prior to import, sale, or deployment in India. These requirements include mandatory testing, registration, and approval under relevant Indian standards, with particular focus on cybersecurity safeguards, data storage practices, and restrictions on unauthorized data transmission outside the country. Devices must also meet specific criteria relating to firmware integrity and secure communication channels.

Industry reports indicate that several major Chinese manufacturers have been affected, as existing products may not meet the new technical and security thresholds or certification timelines. As a result, shipments lacking compliant certification are subject to denial of market entry, increased customs scrutiny, or potential enforcement action.

From a compliance perspective, companies operating in the surveillance, electronics, and smart device sectors should urgently review product portfolios, certification status, and supply chain dependencies. Coordination with authorized testing bodies and Indian regulatory authorities will be critical to ensure continued market access. Importers should also verify documentation completeness and alignment with updated licensing requirements.

Overall, the new rules reflect India’s broader push to strengthen digital security governance while tightening oversight of connected technologies entering its domestic market.
