The Government of India, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), issued S.O. 271584 (CG-DL-E-06042026-271584) dated 6 April 2026, titled the Safety of Household, Commercial and Similar Electrical Appliances (Quality Control) Order, 2026.
This order introduces mandatory safety compliance for a wide range of electrical appliances intended for household, commercial, or similar applications. The scope covers appliances operating at rated voltages not exceeding 250 V for single-phase appliances and 480 V for other appliances, including direct current supplied appliances and battery-operated appliances. The covered products include items such as vacuum cleaners, cooking ranges, ovens, food processors, dishwashers, heaters, personal care appliances, commercial cooking equipment, and other similar electrical goods listed in the schedule.
The applicable standard under the order is IS 302 (Part 1): 2024, aligned with IEC 60335-1:2020, titled Household and Similar Electrical Appliances – Safety, Part 1: General Requirements. Products within scope must conform to the relevant Indian Standard and bear the Standard Mark under Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) licensing requirements.
The implementation dates are phased by enterprise size. For general enterprises, the order will apply from 1 October 2026; for small enterprises, from 1 January 2027; and for micro enterprises, from 1 April 2027. The notice also states that the latest version of the Indian Standard will apply for purposes of the order, and certain exemptions are provided for exports, limited R&D imports, and pre-notified stock under specified conditions.
For trade compliance and regulatory teams, this is an important market access measure. Companies supplying electrical appliances to India should review product coverage, confirm BIS certification status, assess supplier readiness, and prepare any required testing, documentation, and certification actions well ahead of the applicable dates.
